Although Fresno isn’t among the most well-known cities in California, it does have a certain charm to its downtown area. However, the best part of Fresno is the abundant natural beauty within 100 miles or less of the city center. If you’re an avid outdoorsman or hiker, these areas give you the opportunity to see some amazing landscapes while getting some exercise. The next time you’re planning a hike, don’t overlook these awesome hiking trails in the Fresno area.
Located just 10 miles north of Fresno on California Route 41, the Lewis S. Eaton Trail is one of the most popular trails for hikers, joggers, and bikers. Currently, the trail is only in the infant stages of its planned 22-mile journey, but it still has a five-mile trek one-way that provides excellent views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the San Joaquin River. It’s a paved path, so all ages and fitness levels can enjoy the trip.
China Creek Park is one of the hidden gems of the Fresno area with over 120 acres of unspoiled wilderness. There aren’t any amenities here, but there is an abundance of nature. With a trail that runs throughout the park, China Park is ideal for a nice saunter on a warm day. Nature lovers will also love the wildlife, native plants, and birdwatching opportunities.
Just one hour east of Fresno is the majestic Kings Canyon National Park, which provides closeups of the Sierra Nevada mountains set against lush greenery and beautiful alpine lakes. Cedar Grove is the town that delves deepest into the park, and its trails are known as some of the greatest in California. There are 10 routes that wind their way through the park, and most are easy for all ages and hiking levels.
The three-mile Roaring River Falls Trail is a quick hike that gives you unprecedented access to a waterfall that rushes through the granite rocks. For something more strenuous, opt for the Lookout Creek Trail, which provides a wonderful panorama of the backcountry. This 13-mile trek is an all-day affair, climbing 4,000 feet to the top of the lookout.
If you’re willing to travel the hour and a half to Sequoia National Park, you’re in for a world that looks almost like fantasy. Each trail here takes you through a Giant Sequoia forest, home to the largest trees in the world. These mammoth trees grow an average of 40 cubic feet a year, and most reach a minimum of 260 feet tall. The Giant Forest Loop Trail is the top trail for those with kids, as it’s flat and gives you a chance to touch the trees. You can also hit the General Sherman Trail, which takes you up to General Sherman, the largest single stem tree in the world.
With so many top-notch hiking options in the Fresno area, you’re bound to find something that suits your taste and fitness levels. Happy hiking!
