Fresno boasts around 300 days of sunshine, making it the perfect city for picnicking. The city certainly has plenty of parks that cater to picnickers. The following are the most popular recreational parks in Fresno.
At 300 acres, Woodward Regional Park is the largest park in Fresno. There are seven picnic areas and three playgrounds. You can relax and feed ducks and geese at the lake or at one of the three ponds. Woodward Park also offers running and biking trails, a fenced-in dog park, and a BMX track. In summer, you can enjoy the Woodward Shakespeare Festival at the amphitheater. The Shinzen Japanese Garden, located inside the park, is worth a visit. This tranquil garden features a stunning collection of Bonsai.
This nine-acre park has two picnic pavilions with barbeques. For the kids, there are two play structures with play-safe matting around them, baby swing sets, and a raised sand play area. This park is easy to navigate for people with disabilities. It has received numerous innovation and design awards for its fully accessible and user-friendly design. The park features a wheelchair basketball court, two interpretative mazes for the visually impaired, swings for special needs children, and uses slopes instead of steps throughout the park.
Modelled after its sister park, Oso de Oro Lake Park, this park also caters well to the disabled. It also has two picnic pavilions and play areas with play-safe matting. You’ll enjoy an acre of green space adjacent to the water tower pavilion and a ponding basin with a wildlife observation dock and amphitheater. The “Mini Fresno” delights everyone who sees it. It’s a wonderful display of Fresno’s history with miniature replicas of the Meux Home Mansion, the Old Fresno Water Tower, a replica 1920 Birney trolley car, walk bridges, and a dry model of Dry Creek.
Kearney Park is named after M. Theodore Kearney who pioneered Fresno’s agriculture industry in the 1800s. This park is perfect for picnicking with sprawling lush green grass and 11 group picnic shelters that you can reserve. There is a playground, two horseshoe pits, two soccer fields, two softball fields, and two dance slabs. Kearney Mansion, the historic home of M. Theo Kearney, is located in the park and tours are available on weekends. During summer, the park stays open until 10 p.m. and in winter until 7 p.m.
Railroad Park is in nearby Clovis, about 12 miles from downtown Fresno. It’s a great option for parents with young kids. There are two play areas, one for toddlers and another for older kids as well as baby swings. You’ll find picnic tables scattered throughout the park and three large covered areas you can reserve for kids’ birthday parties. There’s a softball field, two soccer fields, and basketball courts. The walking and bike trail runs right next to the park and is also great for walking dogs.
With beautiful surroundings, great weather, and plenty of parks, getting out and about in Fresno is something the locals love to do. Just fill your picnic basket and pick a park.
