JeepĀ® Service 101: Replacing a Tire

When you think of a tough, rugged, off-road vehicle, any number of JeepĀ® models probably come to mind. And even if you keep up with routineĀ Jeep serviceĀ like oil changes, tire rotations, and tune-ups, sometimes you find yourself in need of replacing a tire.

So, how do you know if a tire needs to be replaced, and how do you do it yourself? Hereā€™s everything you need to know about replacing a tire on your Jeep vehicle.

How Do I Know if a Tire on my Jeep Needs to be Replaced?

There are several indications that you might need to replace a tire on your Jeep. Some obvious signs include a shaky steering wheel or your vehicle pulling to one side. If you donā€™t have as much control over the vehicle as you usually do, you might be driving on a bad tire.

Another indication of a damaged tire is the Tire Pressure warning light. Many models including theĀ Jeep WranglerĀ include a TPMS system that will alert the driver to low tire pressure.

You can also check the tire for physical signs that it needs to be replaced. Look for any bulges or blisters, as well as road debris like a screw or bolt that mightā€™ve gotten stuck in your tire. If you see any damage or experience any of the above symptoms, you likely need to replace the tire.

How Do I Replace a Tire on My JeepĀ® Vehicle?

Replacing a tire can be stressful. First, pull off the road, take a deep breath, and remember that this is a pretty common chore. Then, follow these steps:

  • Turn on your hazard lights and lock your parking brake.
  • Grab your spare tire and jack.
  • Remove the hubcap, loosen the lug nuts, and use the jack to lift the damaged wheel off the ground a few inches.
  • Unscrew the lug nuts and remove the damaged tire.
  • Place the spare tire on the wheel and tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle and put the jack and damaged tire in the trunk.
  • Make sure the spare tireā€™s pressure is between 32-36 PSI.
  • Get back on the road and head to your local Jeep dealership to get a new tire.
