Jeep® Service 101: Jump-Starting

Keeping your battery strong and healthy is an important part of standard Jeep® service. But what do you do if your battery dies? Here are some tips for jump-starting your vehicle and getting back on the road.

How Do I Jump-Start My Jeep® Battery?

There are two main methods to jump-starting your Jeep battery: you can jump it from another car or from a charged battery pack. Either way, be careful! Jump starting is a great skill to have, but it can be dangerous if not done correctly.

The first step is to locate and untangle your jumper cables. Second, connect the cables:

• The red (positive) cable goes on the dead battery’s positive terminal.
• The black (negative) cable goes on the negative terminal of the working battery.
• The remaining black (negative) cable goes on an unpainted metal portion of the dead car.

Then, start the working car or battery pack, followed by starting the dead car. It should fire right up! Be sure to let it run for at least five or 10 minutes. You should be good to go for a while — but you’ll probably need to replace that battery soon.

How Do I Prevent My Jeep® Battery From Dying?

Jeep batteries generally last between three and five years. To keep that battery strong, make sure you don’t leave any lights on while the car is off. Extreme temperatures can also drain a battery, so if you live in a particularly hot or cold climate, make sure you drive your Jeep at least a few times a week to recharge the battery.
